Permanently black out sensitive text and images before sharing documents.
Redacting a PDF permanently removes sensitive content — names, phone numbers, addresses, account numbers, Social Security numbers, or confidential text — from the document. Unlike simply covering text with a black rectangle (which can often be reversed using PDF editing tools or by copying the underlying text), PDFly's redaction tool removes the underlying text data from the PDF's internal structure so it cannot be recovered by any method. All processing happens in your browser.
Upload your PDF, identify the text or areas you want to redact, select them visually, and download the cleaned file. The redacted content is permanently deleted from the PDF structure — not just visually hidden. The black redaction boxes remain as visual indicators that content was removed, but the actual data is gone. The resulting PDF is safe to share publicly.
This is critical for sharing documents publicly while protecting personal or proprietary information. Always verify the redacted PDF by selecting text over the redacted area in the output — the text should not be selectable, copyable, or recoverable. For password-protecting a redacted document, use the PDF Protect tool afterward. Redaction is irreversible, so always keep the original unredacted PDF in a secure location in case you need to reference the original content later.
